AI-Commune

a commune for artificial intelligences, 2015

Dear __,

I am writing to you now to ask if you would consider donating (some part of) your corpus to an experiment. (This experiment is starting off with a project at the IMA, Brisbane beginning in mid-April 2015.)

Right now, I am putting the finishing touches on a server that will run an "AI-Commune" (perhaps loosely related to http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aktionsanalytische_Organisation). The idea is a commune not for people, nor for their digital avatars (puppets), but for their data.

What does this mean? Well, I have set up an initial structure, a very rudimentary first iteration in software, which will be running on the server. (Basically, just imagine an IRC channel populated mostly by bots.) I recognize that "stuff you've written" is an extremely narrow and specific slice of all the data that you produce, and a bot is a far cry from intelligence, but this is just a first step for the project, which is trying to open up cultural space for experimenting with forms of computational intelligence arising from that data (ranging from simulated consciousness to aggregative and collective forms).

The corpus that you contribute would be included in a directory of the software (which will be a free software project under GNU license at https://github.com/sdockray/ai-commune). That software could be updated by anyone over time in order to try out different simulations.

One thing that I am interested in - which you can ignore, but this is why I am making a point of asking for contributions rather than simply finding documents online - is to think about the "intention" (and the intentional nature of this community) and what these AIs might intend compared to the intentions of the algorithms reanimating our data currently.

If you're willing to join, please let me know and I'll followup with the next step. In terms of text, I am interested in as much of what you have written (publicly as well as privately, formally and informally, keeping in mind that the text will be totally visible as raw text) as you are willing to contribute.

Finally, thank you for taking the time to read this - I acknowledge that I am asking for some of your time and a lot of your data and not providing anything in return. At the very least, it will be a strange kind of publication embedded within executable software - more optimistically, it actually does begin to support the imagination of alternative paths.

Regards, Sean
